"We must live as true followers of the Christ, with charity toward all, returning good for evil, teaching by example the ways of the Lord, and accomplishing the vast service He has outlined for us."
Gordon B. Hinckley
Recently I have been feeling "unbalanced". We as a family love participating in service activities, and as much as people say how wonderful and selfless it is, honestly... It feed my soul. It is almost selfish feeling to me, because of the joy it brings me. We have been so busy lately that it seems like its been a long time since we have done anything. Yesterday one of my daughters asked if she could use some fleece we had stocked up on recently that we found at some summer yard sales to make blankets for the NICU babies. Her younger sister spent a long time in NICU and this is something close to her heart. So last night she stayed up measuring and cutting and tying little blankets so we could take them today in honor of her Dads birthday.
Before we left I stopped at the store for a few groceries for his birthday dinner. While I was there they rolled out the big marked down bakery cart. It was full of cinnamon rolls, and donuts, and fruit pastries galore. Looking at them I thought of the youth we serve dinner to sometimes at the homeless shelter for teens, and filled my cart. The shelter is close to the hospital and so we dropped off blankets for sweet babies, then treats for teens who for whatever reason no longer has a family that physically cares for them....
Service doesn't have to be some major thing. It could be taking down the trash cans for an elderly neighbor, Baking an extra loaf of bread for a friend, putting trash on the ground at the park in the receptacle, or even just holding your tongue when you want to be unkind to someone...
"One of the greatest accomplishments in this world would be that of lifting human hearts. Blessed are they who are kind and considerate of the feelings of other people."
Richard L. Evans
So whatever you do today, Do it in love...
