Digging Yourself Out ( Post One )



During my journey I realized that what I took in audibly is incredibly important. In my most miserable times I would watch very depressing shows, or listen to angry or sad music. Misery loves company is a popular phrase, but it’s so true! Looking back I also realized that I would be sucked into anything negative.


How many social media arguments have you either engaged in or just followed to watch? That used to be a regular form of entertainment for me!


Then one day I was mindlessly scrolling through Facebook ,as people that are miserable do and saw a meme with this story pop up.


An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life.

“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.

“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”

He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

And I stopped and thought for a minute.... and because I’m brutally honest I’ll admit I didn’t stop to think about it based on myself. I actually paused because I thought it was a great thought for a friend of mine that was always focused on the negative. ( pot meet kettle much lol )


And so I started compiling these positive stories for her to try to lift her up. Then I realized I was actually lifting myself! Imagine that! Reading positive thoughts was making me feel a little hopeful?! So then I went looking for an article about physical health and negative stress ( yes positive stress is a thing ) and I found this...

Whoa hold up! Could I fix some of my own physical health issues with focusing on positive things each day? I figured I had nothing to lose and so I’d give it a try for a few days.


It was HARD! I’d go to turn on some YouTube video about something negative, or read some horrible news story on social media ( then go right to the comments ) or switch on songs that reminded me that life is horrible and sad ( dramatic much ? ) so I had to fight my own thoughts to switch my mindset. I had to make the choice to switch to a positive video or song, and force myself to walk away from the fight with strangers on FB. And little by little it got easier.


Then I discovered that I could do this anywhere! I could tell Alexa to play an audible book or podcast, and I could even play them in my car! Yep I still get irritated at people who don’t use their blinker or drive 5 miles under the speed limit lol but somehow I handle it a little better with Rachel Hollis or Mel Robbins talking to me through it.


So I challenge you to start today by listening to something positive. Even for just 5 minutes. And if you find yourself in the worst mood instead of feeding those emotions with more anger and negativity, seek out something that uplifts you! Even if it’s just cute animal videos. ( I’m a sucker for cute animal videos )
